Justin's first day.

Ahh, the first day of Kindergarten. All those nerves and the excitement that we felt when Jacob started Kindergarten came rushing back to us today as we dropped our baby off with backpack, lunch box, and emergency contact information sheet in hand. He was all smiles this morning before we left, but quickly gained a very forlorn expression as we met with his other classmates and teacher on the playground. There was a little boy who approached us almost immediately and asked what Justin's name was. His name is Diego. He took to Justin right off and asked him to stand in line with him and told Justin that they would sit by each other in the classroom. What a blessing this little boy is! The tears welled to the surface as Tom and I turned and walked off (you know because it is easier for the child if you don't make a scene - yeah, right, I say it is for the parents sake). We had the pleasure of meeting his teacher, Mrs. Raley, on Back to School night and for his assessment on Monday. She is a very sweet lady and I feel lucky that he ended up in her class. She said that he excelled in his assessment and should be reading by himself soon. I got to see him at lunchtime and he had a smile on his face as he and Diego were talking back and forth from two different tables. After lunch is a short recess and when Justin walked out the door, Diego was waiting for him and off they went, without a 'Bye', 'See ya', or 'Love you'. My how they grow! When I picked him up, he was still in good spirits. He told Jacob that he had a good day and had made a new friend. Sweet, sweet music to my ears.
I have great expectations for Justin's diabetes management. The school nurse is very aware and involved. However, at this time, she is not allowed to give any injections since we have not seen an endocrinologist in Colorado. She has to have a care plan from a Coloradan doctor first. What this boils down to is that I will need to go to the school each day, at least twice a day, so that I can check his blood glucose level and give him an injection when needed. His appointment is not until the end of October. Again, I am very blessed to not have to work outside the home and can be there when needed. It's a little bit of a juggling act until we all get used to the schedule, but today went very well. I even filled out a volunteer form so that I can help out when needed at the school since I will be there so frequently. The school is literally 5 minutes away from our condo. I am just beaming with happiness and pride right now for all my boys!
